BME Communities

Back to Access introduction page
In 2006 the Joint Learning Disabilities Service launched a strategy specifically aimed at supporting people from black and minority ethnic communities. We also produced an easy read version of the strategy. You can get a copy of the BME strategy and easy read version at the bottom of this page.

BME link workers

The Joint Learning Disabilities Service has BME link workers who work as part of a Community Learning Disabilities Team. BME link workers work with other people in the service to support adults with a learning disability who are from black and minority ethnic communities. The BME link workers speak both English and Punjabi.

The BME link workers help people to get assessments and support that is appropriate to their cultural needs. This support can be for health, housing and social care. We may also support you by referring to other services or help with communications.

You can contact the link workers at

Getting help with information in other languages

If you are a person with a learning disability or a family carer you can help free of charge from the National Interpreting Service. When you are in touch with the Joint Learning Disabilities Service or Sheffield City Council, and need help with translating information, we can help you. One of the ways we can do this is to arrange for the National Interpreting Service to speak to you and to us, to translate information about your enquiry. Just let the person you speak to know you would like help with translations when you ring us.
