Self advocacy is about being able to speak up for yourself. It’s about being able to say how you feel and what you want in your life, having your voice heard and about making real choices, like having a say in where you live, what you do, and how the services you use are run. It’s also about being able to make choices about things like where you go out, if you have a job or getting married. If you want to be able to have more of a say in your own life and that of others there are lots of places you can go to in Sheffield to find out more about self advocacy or speaking up. One of these is Speaking Up For Action (SUFA).
Speaking Up For Action is a self
advocacy or speak up group. It is run by people with learning
disabilities for people with learning disabilities. It’s about people
learning to speak up for themselves and helping others to speak up for
what they want in their life. It has 30 members that meet regularly to
talk about issues that affect people with a learning disability. We
write a newsletter and hold a Parliament once a month where people can
meet to talk about things. We attend meetings about how our services
are provided and run and we give presentations and training to others.
We also support people to learn about what real choice is and to
explore new opportunities.
