Carers’ Support Groups
There are a wide range of support groups in the city for the families and
carers of people with various disabilities and illnesses. Some are run by professionals, for example, in doctors' surgeries. Others are run by voluntary organisations and there are also small self help groups, run entirely by carers themselves.

The Sheffield Carers Centre publishes a directory of Carers Support Groups which can help you find the group that best suits your needs. Please contact the Sheffield Carers Centre's telephone helpline on 0114 272 8362 for more information.

You can download information about carers groups from the Help Yourself website at www.sheffieldhelpyourself.org.uk/

Older Carers Support Service
Work by the Sharing Caring Project and Sheffield Case Register has revealed that many older family carers feel isolated in the caring role and have needs of their own as older people.

The Older Carers Support Service provides support to older carers of people with a learning disability.

Two support visitors will
  • visit and keep in regular contact with older family carers aged 70 and over
  • act as a link between carers and a range of support
  • build up relationships to support carers to deal with problems before they turn into crisis
  • record information that can be used to support people in emergencies
