What is mobility?

Mobility is how you get from one place to another. There are many different ways that you can get around, some people can use more ways to get around if they have some training or support.

What is the Mobility Strategy?

Sheffield City Council Adult Services provides services to people who need support to live independent lives. Mobility, or travel, makes a big difference to whether people can live the lives they want to lead and to people being included and part of the community.

In Sheffield, like the rest of the UK, there are more and more older people and people with disabilities. In the future, more of these people are likely to need services. We need a Mobility Strategy to make sure we are helping people to get around in the best and most independent way that they can. We need to make sure we are able to provide services for those who need them.

Sheffield is leading the way in giving disabled and older people control over their care and support. How people get around is very important for people having control over their lives. If a disabled or older person wants to do something that involves a journey, then they should have choices about how to make that journey and support if they need it.

Who was involved in writing the Strategy?

Over 400 people all over Sheffield gave their time and ideas and shared stories of their experiences to help write the Mobility Strategy. Lots of different people were involved, including people from the physically disabled, sensory impaired, learning disabled and older people’s communities, family carers and the people who have a role in supporting people.
